#FTOF (Full Tank Of Freedom)

“I think cars encapsulate the history of innovation and style – it’s the other side of the coin of the car being public enemy number one.”

Sir Norman Foster (architect)

Have you ever watched a video commercial and something about it just seems off…out of touch with current social reality? So much so that the visual echo requires you to take action? The advertisement from Marathon Petroleum has been attacked, demonized, and heralded since it first took to the airwaves. Personally I think they hit their target audience while inadvertently touching off an internet powder keg.

On the surface everything is idyllically framed by a popularized retro-patriotic feel punctuated by a downloadable song. How fantabulous is that? Well maybe if you ascribe to the country western genre…non judgmental of course. Lets also overlook the glaring union between the military and big oil for commercial pursuits.

Has the popularized US car culture died, morphed into a public enemy of itself, or is everything just fine in your cotton candy clouded gaussian blurred dreams?

The first choice is obviously evidenced by the death of drive-in movie theaters / restaurants coupled with a ubiquitous landscape of SUV’s and crossovers. Regrettably the second choice also has increasingly become apparent as incidents of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths reverberate in the daily news. Seriously if you think everything is fine it is time that ostrich pulled its head out of the sand.
